What does Oppo think of the “marked” state trooper car with markings so hard to read that they really might as well not be there? I figure it is no different than an unmarked car, but I assume there is some legality to which they are meeting the letter of the law, while destroying the spirit.

Sort of malicious compliance. You want markings? fine, you’ve got markings.

SHP already runs unmarked cars in NC so unless they made a new law banning this I don’t see the point.

Exactly. There must be some obscure law which requires a marked car to be enforced, and this is how they meet that while being effectively unmarked. Maybe I’m being too cynical, and it’s just for the “cool” factor?

Marked cars serve the purpose of getting people to obey the laws. No one (almost) does anything stupid or speeds when they see a marked car. The only purpose for having these is to catch people. A police force seeking as close to perfect compliance as possible would’ve no need of unmarked or stealth marked traffic enforcement cars.

If it’s used for traffic enforcement, it’s BS. Or at least, it’s BS while the speed limits and excessive stop sign use aren’t based on reality.
As it is, it’s a cash grab.

Wake County has (maybe, I haven’t been home for 7 months) a Corvette that is impossible to tell it’s a police car. I used to see it on I40 all the time.

This is starting to be really common. I was in WA the other day and saw a sheriff with the same thing going on.

I mean, it’s tax payer money, I think clearly marked patrol cars would be great to scare criminals from actually doing crimes, or people who would be speeding from speeding at all just because of its presence so I’d rather have them marked... Not that we have unmarked cruisers here in Mexico City at least.

In the article it seems as if this is a reward for the troopers who get to drive them, so maybe it all comes down to style.

Unmarked cars should not be allowed to pull over or ticket anyone. They should only be used for undercover work, where, ya know, being indistinguishable from other cars is useful. Unmarked cars patrolling only serve the purpose of collecting revenue.
If it fails the SCCA autocross rules for lettering, it is unmarked. - Lettering must be a clearly contrasting color, and large enough to be easily read from a distance.
Just my 2 cents.

Did you know there are unmarked Durango cops in MI? Not sure if Macomb/Oakland/Wayne have them or not. But I saw one in St.Clair Co a few weeks ago. Not sure if it was local, county, or state but I assume if one has them the others do as well.

PA has switched its marked state trooper cars from white with black/gold lettering to gray/brown and gray markings. Though not technically ghost graphics, it’s close.
Maryland has been using ghost graphics on its state trooper cars for a few years now. I’d imagine that highway cars are all going to be like this in a few years, while local cars will remain obviously marked as those are more of a deterrent.

Honestly, we should paint all police cars like the Brits do:
If I need assistance I should be able to quickly identify and flag down an officer. Likewise, I should be able to see the car in general when they’re pulled over/blocking lanes, for both their safety and mine. Final point, it’s a lot harder for assholes to imitate a police officer with a loud paint job than it is to stick a few strobes in the grille of your black Charger.
Traffic cops aren’t secret agents, they don’t need stealth vehicles.

I’m 100% in agreement.
The problem with the police in the US is that they are obsessed with power tripping, not with helping people. These cars are a reflection of this fact. Their cars, unless used exclusively for investigation, should always be extremely visible and very difficult to mimic (and something that would attract the attention of the actual police if they have marked their car in this manner). This is a public safety issue all around and there are zero legitimate reasons for police cars that are unmarked or ghost marked to be used for law enforcement.

I hate any police car that’s trying to look intimidating or cool in any way. If you want an unmarked car for undercover work, that’s fine, you can have those. But patrol cars should be brightly marked and friendly looking...if I just got mugged and I see a blacked out Charger with no (or hard to read) markings, I’m not going to approach that shit.

It pisses me off. My local county Sheriff runs dark blue cars with medium blue lettering. A town I drive through everyday just bought a fleet of new black Explorers and Tahoes with flat black lettering. It’s so clearly done just to generate revenue from chicken-shit tickets.

In our state:
“It is unlawful for any public officer having charge of any vehicle owned or controlled by any county, city, town, or public body in this state other than the state of Washington and used in public business to operate the same upon the public highways of this state unless and until there shall be displayed upon such automobile or other motor vehicle in letters of contrasting color not less than one and one-quarter inches in height in a conspicuous place on the right and left sides thereof, the name of such county, city, town, or other public body, together with the name of the department or office upon the business of which the said vehicle is used. This section shall not apply to vehicles of a sheriff’s office, local police department, or any vehicles used by local peace officers under public authority for special undercover or confidential investigative purposes”
Apparently you can make some of them real uncomfortable by casually pointing it out. “Oh I didn’t notice the markings, they blend in so well officer.” That, which they have to record for a ticket issue raises lots of questions and concerns: did the person speed because they thought they were being tailgated, did the person take a long time to pull over, because they thought it was an imposter, etc.
I think the university police employed that tactic, and they had to undo their cars because people didn’t recognize them as cop cars. Like when they were barricading parking lots on game days, people thought they were advertisements for chargers and would attempt to drive around them.

There’s 3 very small towns near me that together issue 1/3 of all speeding tickets in the state, they use those stealth cars for that purpose. As if the dark grey Tahoe with push bars, police lights, and steel wheels sitting on the side of the road facing toward traffic is completely inconspicuous.
